Football

This year was quite a year for both the JV and Varsity Football Teams. This past summer Woodlake hosted its first Passing League Tournament at the Castle Rock playing fields. Eight teams participated including: Immanuel, Caruthers, Dinuba, Strathmore, El Diamante, Coast Union, and Farmersville. Kiwanis provided a pancake breakfast and hamburger and hot dog barbeque, while our newly formed Football Boosters Club helped set up and serve. It was a tremendous success and we are expecting ten teams next year!

The off-season started strong with a newly implemented, mandatory weight program, which continued throughout the season and into playoffs. Undoubtedly, the weight room truly made a difference in our athletes’ strength and conditioning. The WHS Foundation definitely got the ball rolling with this project with financial assistance in purchasing new weight equipment. From there, The Heritage Project stepped in and helped complete the renovation of the weight room. Our next goal is to add Todd Peltzer’s graphic design work on the walls to enhance its overall appearance and install Tiger Pride in the room!

These above accomplishments definitely set the tone when our season started. Our JV Team had impressive victories over Taft, Strathmore, and Dinuba. These young men fought hard all year, and displayed tremendous heart in their games.

The Varsity Football Team finished the season strong, playing a twelve game season, advancing to the Semi-Finals of the Sequoia Division Playoffs. The Tigers beat Taft High School in the first round of the playoffs 21-0, marking the first time in twenty-one years Woodlake has beat a Sequoia Division school in the playoffs. In addition, it was the first time Woodlake has shut out a Sequoia school in the playoffs in school history. Unfortunately, the Tigers lost to San Joaquin Memorial, who went on to win Valley, in the Semi-Finals 28-6. Other impressive regular season victories were over Immanuel, Strathmore, Corcoran, and Lindsay. There were seven players recognized at the 1st Team All League Level: Jesus Donate, Daniel Plummer, Jesus Rivera, Ben Corona, Eric Perez and Steven Porras. Abraham Rodriguez was named Defensive Player of the Year for the East Sequoia League.

This year’s team with its hard work ethics, discipline and accountability has set a precedent for future teams to follow. Tiger Pride!
